Mr. Coonen, founder, holds a Ph.D. in Mathematics from the University of California, Berkeley. He headed the software team that delivered the original Macintosh and several subsequent products at Apple Computer. Later he built up the software team for Apple's Newton pen-based computer. At Berkeley Mr. Coonen and his graduate advisor, Prof. W. Kahan, developed a standard for scientific computation on microprocessors. Prof. Kahan won the prestigious Turing Award for his work, but it fell to Mr. Coonen to be the ambassador, to be sure that the big players would rally round this standard, which has been implemented in every major microprocessor of the last decades.
